About the ABRSM Exams

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music is a registered UK charity established by the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It is the leading authority on classical musical assessment. By delivering exams rigorously and consistently they set the worldwide gold standard, with over 650,000 candidates, in over 90 countries, choosing to take them every year. Higher grades carry UCAS points for university; a high mark at Grade 8 being the equivalent of an AS level qualification.

Normally ABRSM exams are held at a hotel. The advantages of using GIS as the venue are:

  • The exam date is fixed and is known much earlier giving a much clearer idea of the preparation time for both students and teachers.

  • Other rooms in the department can be used for warming up before the exam.

  • Students are able to carry on with normal lessons before and after the exam without having to travel into town and back.

  • Parents are at liberty to choose whether they need to be there or not - also saving much time.

  • Pianists are able to practice on the actual exam piano in the 2 weeks leading up to the exam.
